"If you drive it, you will buy it" Those were the words I once heard when poking around a used car lot in Virginia to kill time before a basketball game.
Parked in a corner was a four-door e30 that needed some TLC.
I wasn't looking for a four-door e30 that needed a radio and seat covers.
But it was love at first gear, and in that test-drive, she drove and pulled with love and life, a seat-cover and a radio didn't matter as she told me everything I needed to know about her launching, carving and zipping around Alexandria, VA.
She came home with me a week later and got the alpine head unit and (rescued) 325is seats she deserved.
The owner after me didn't even test-drive her.
He sent his ride home, walked up my driveway, handed me twice my buying price, and insisted the only test drive he needed was on the way to the notary.
I am reminded of those words as I list my beloved s80.
Alas, there are a few minor things that don't require attention but could made perfect.
But she runs and drives flawlessly.
She is amazing.
Silky ride with buttery smooth power on tap.
"If you drive it, you will buy it.
" Continue reading if you are a Volvo enthusiast and aficionado.
I won't spend the time to convince you that this is one of the world's most perfect engines in a FULLY loaded luxury car with great seats.
If you are going to buy this car, you should already know what an s80 is and what that 4.
4 liter Yamaha built v8 is.
Before all the good I will give you the bad, full disclosure.
1.
The gas cap door does not latch tight, not really an issue but it would be nice to see it flush to the car.
2.
After a new CEM, the parking sensors stopped working.
I have a new parking-module that comes with the car but it may be software related as well.
I thought the new owner could address the issue or may have a really nice driveway.
3.
The fog lights are on if the car is running.
4.
A new P420 code, the car has a brand-new inspection sticker, and my county doesn't inspect for exhaust.
- I will attempt to address issue 4 before sale.
After I first bought the car I had her in for basic service she stalled out.
We took her straight to the dealer.
After getting her running perfect again, she developed a mystery misfire that was a bugger.
All possible issues were addressed, and she now runs flawlessly! Here is a list of new parts installed by Volvo specialists and Volvo dealers along the way chasing that mystery misfire.
First, a Volvo warrantied ECU.
A new in-dash ignition and fob and power steering lines.
And very recently: a Volvo Warrantied CEM, Volvo spark plugs, Volvo ignition coils, Volvo injectors, a fuel pressure sensor, a camshaft position sensor, a mass air flow sensor, an air intake hose, an air intake seal, throttle body gasket, an entire new PCV system with Volvo brand valve, new fuel filter, air filter, and more I can't recall.
Also, yellow fog lights, coolant flush, and more I can't recall.
She is bone stock with no mods at all.
Just detailed.
Long story short she is the most well-tuned and maintained s80 v8 you are going to find on Craigslist or Face Book marketplace.
The truth is in the test drive; "if you drive it, you will buy it".
Previously I have owned an xc90 v8, a 240, a c70 hard top, two 850 turbos, one 850 non-turbo, a v70xc, two xc70, and a v70 R type.
I miss the turbo 850 with the torque wheels and I miss the R type.
I will miss the s80 v8 more than any of them and will regret selling it.
If no one comes very near to the asking price, I will happily keep her.
I just bought a beautiful 3 series with a six-speed manual, and a Jetta wagon also six speed manual; I still like to row my gears.
I can't keep all my cars and my wife, so one of them will be finding a new home.
