The Legal department provides exceptional counsel that assures legal compliance and enables FirstEnergy to optimize business outcomes in all legal, regulatory, and commercial contexts.
The Legal department is involved in every major activity and initiative involving all entities of FirstEnergy Corp.
This The position will serve as a legal advisor to various business units, including utility distribution operations, with emphasis on personal injury and property damage litigation.
The successful candidate will (a) work directly with the business units, department lawyers and outside counsel on all aspects of the foregoing; (b) handle complex legal matters and projects; (c) conduct legal research, negotiate, draft and edit legal documents; and (d) serve on cross-functional teams assisting senior attorneys in representing the organization in various matters.
The position reports to the Managing Counsel who is responsible for defending tort litigation and managing claims, among other matters, who is located at the corporate headquarters in Akron, Ohio.
Location: [Hybrid/Remote but limit to FirstEnergy service territory] Responsibilities include : Investigating, managing and directing the defense of legal actions, and major claims initiated by third parties against the Company Participates in mediations, settlement conferences, and negotiates settlements Works with and provides legal advice to multiple business units across the company footprint Supports claim organization with pre-litigation negotiations Provides legal support for collection litigation against third-parties who have damaged company equipment Analyze information, legal documents, interview relevant parties and consultants, and attend depositions and trials Conducts legal research Represents the Company in legal disputes and transactions with opposing counsel Understands and manages work according to departmental budget Demonstrates FirstEnergy values and behaviors Qualifications Include: JD degree from an accredited law school required.
Active license in PA and/or NJ required Minimum 5 years relevant work experience required.
Relevant work experience will include experience investigating and managing pre-litigation and litigated matters, as well as negotiating settlements Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, PowerPoint) Strong written and oral communication skills Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with people at all levels and with varying backgrounds Ability to work well under pressure Ability to maintain high degree of confidentiality Demonstrated proficiency in legal research Ability to work with limited supervision Strong team player Problem solver, seeking creative solutions Benefits, Compensation & Workforce Diversity At FirstEnergy, employees are key to our success.
